Devin Thomas Gaines (July 16, 1984 – July 10, 2007) was a college student at the University of Connecticut who attracted international media attention by earning five Bachelor's degrees simultaneously on May 6, 2007, a historic achievement. ==Early life== Gaines grew up in poverty in Stamford with his mother Berneatha L. Gaines and brother Roy Gaines Jr. Devin also has additional siblings: Coretta F Housey, Ne Tosha D. Sumpter, Lopaz M. Sumpter, (Stamford) and Kenya Gaines (Mississippi). His father died when he was twelve. He spent much time studying and learning at Yerwood Community Center, where its director, Kathryn Murdock, instilled in the boy an appreciation for the value of an education. Suffering from obesity, and taunted by classmates, Devin surrounded himself with books. Devin attended King Low Heywood Thomas School and Stamford High School, graduating from the latter. At KLHT, Thomas was active in several clubs, including math and debate. He contributed heavily to school plays and made a few close friends before transferring to Stamford High School. During his time there, he acquired advanced computer skills as a member of a Cisco Networking Academy. He also sang tenor with 'The Madrigals', an a cappella singing group at Stamford High School. Upon graduation from Stamford High School, he was awarded a $29,000 scholarship to attend University of Connecticut. In addition, the University of Connecticut awarded Gaines a leadership scholarship. Gaines explained the start of his early academic childhood in an interview after college graduation. "My father brought home a broken computer and I was able to put it together. When he saw that I did that, he decided to take me to a community center. There I met up with a woman, Kathryn Murdock, who became an inspiration in my (academic) life."
